First Day At Work!
Posted: February 28, 2010 13:52 by kamiya

So, the word is out and everyone knows about the job change. And if you, too, are going to ask me the most obvious question  - How was the first day at work?

Won't be able to put the answer as straight as the question. So, here’s an attempt:

Changing your workplace feels no different than you relocating to a new city and having been forced to change your school.

From sharing your lunch box with all your childhood buddies during the recess to sitting alone, eating and showing the classroom that you are busy reading a book but in reality, you are looking for a company :p

You don't know who from the staff room will be your class teacher. Similarly, you are just trying to guess - 'Is he/she my to-be-boss?'

The fear of new teachers translates into the discomfort you would share with your new bosses.

From which bench to sit on to 'oh, is this bench already occupied?', you don't know which computer will be yours.

Though that's just one side of it. Here's another:

It's a brand new world you enter into. New office, new faces, new computer, new parking lot and a new life.

No judgements, no perceptions. You create the world you want to live into.

You are assured, any boss would be better than your last boss :p

If its a change, it's gotta be a better profile, better position, better pay package and better car parking space (that's just by luck ;-)

Buy brand new clothes and show the world you are going to be the next CEO of the same company ;-)

(PS - I won't be interviewing film celebrities anymore. Business head-honchos and CEOs are my new buddies. I am now working as an anchor with a Business News Channel - ET Now, television extension of the newspaper Economic Times)

Kamiya Calling Karthik
Posted: February 28, 2010 05:35 by kamiya

I have never been so curious to know the suspense. And that is exactly that makes Karthik Calling Karthik so special.

We all love the underdog, don’t we? Reserved, shy and someone who can never say ’No’. Karthik is one such character and his transformation is joyous to watch. At his every success, you celebrate in your heart as it’s your own victory. From him getting a promotion at work to wooing his dreamgirl, you want to try the tricks he did.

And the phone ringing everyday at 5 am gives goosebumps not just to Karthik but even the audience and you just hope that this film has a logical ending. And thank god, it has. Not too different from your imagination but something that will not make you say, ‘how stupid is that!’

Ok, a little bias towards the romance Karthik and Shonali share. I love the song ‘Hey ya, I wanna get closer to you’, and every time that song plays, I seem to like everything that’s happening. The first half makes for a better watch than the second. It does seem like a drag somewhere during the second half but you convince yourself by saying, ‘It’s a different genre of film. Not a typical bollywood masala’

I call it a must-watch-film. Go, book yourself a ticket this weekend!

Dubai - The land of Gold!
Posted: February 28, 2010 04:33 by kamiya

In June 2006, on my way back from London, I decided to stop over in Dubai for 4 days. Dubai then and Dubai Now. Woah, what a massive difference!

Its almost like entering into a brand new city. Not that it was any bad then, but after having spent 15 days in the land of goras, the wheatish faces and the scorching heat gets to you ;-) {PS: I am not racist by nature :p}

We know Dubai is hit by a huge crisis and all. Quite obviously, if the Sheikh decides to spend so much the looks (of Dubai) and the real estate market, how would the poor guy recover! But do we care? The good looks of Dubai only make it a better holiday experience for us tourists.

From roads to malls to buildings or the air-conditioned bus stops! How I wish Mumbai was half as organised as Dubai. Nonetheless,  the city is only two hours away from home.

Let me warn you. Do not plan your trip during the summers. You will not like anything about Dubai. December, January and February - best time to enjoy the belly dancing at Desert safari or an evening date at the Dhow cruise.

Talking about shopping, most malls have great discounts on BIG brands during the festival but even the discounted price is more expensive than the stuff you get in India. Though, be assure you will get great variety and good quality. The choice is yours!

And yes, this land of gold has a shopping place called Gold Souk. Here, gold is sold like how vegetables are sold in Mumbai's sabzi market. It's got the best quality gold along with the most creative designs.

Its been almost a month since I have got back from Dubai but the smell of clean roads and the clean breeze doesn’t leave me. If someone would give me an option to relocate myself to Dubai, I will jump at the opportunity!

The Cinderella Moment!
Posted: January 23, 2010 05:46 by kamiya

Magazines fascinate me. Love the write-ups, the glossy look, full page photographs and the make-overs. Aah, how I wish I was a celebrity!

But don’t be surprised to know that when you really desire for something, the entire universe conspires to realize your wish. No wonder then, Magazine Marie Claire decided to feature me for a ‘Pretty Me’ contest organized by the cosmetic & fragrance brand Elizabeth Arden. Having sent my pictures a month ago, out of nowhere, I get a call from a sweet Parsi girl Sanaya saying she wants to meet me. And the deal was cracked.

A week later, I had a photoshoot at a studio at Grant Road in Mumbai. Now, I am quite used to the video camera and I know what it takes to be able to convince the viewers but for a still camera, well, you just gotta smile!

Advice that I am hooked on!
Posted: December 20, 2009 04:45 by kamiya

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’2009

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.

The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering experience…I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.

But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked….

You’re not as fat as you  imagine. Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.

The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing everyday that scares you... Sing.

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours. Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own...Dance..even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don’t expect anyone else to support you.

Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.  Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who  supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen… :)
